What do I need to know about abortion rights in NC?
SB20, which went into effect July 1, 2023, changes the way we access abortions in North Carolina:
Abortions are now only legal in NC up to 12 weeks
For use of the abortion pill, up to 10 weeks
3 in-person visits to your abortion provider are now required, with 72 hours in between each one
Exceptions past 12 weeks exist for certain circumstances, such as fetal anomalies, but may be difficult to access. Ask your provider for more information.
NC continues to require state-mandated counseling that is intended to discourage patients from having an abortion. They are now also required to show patients ultrasounds.

Due to these new barriers to abortion care in NC, those seeking abortions may want to consider traveling to Virginia: there is an abortion clinic in Bristol, about 1 hour from Boone, called Bristol Women’s Health, LLC
In Virginia there are no current mandatory waiting periods and only 1 appt is required.
